-Berthold Auerbach

Whether your day has been delightful or dreadful, music will invariably make you feel better. My hopes are to post lyrics and links to songs that will put a grin on your face for at least a few minutes, even if it is the first time you have cracked a smile all day.

You can navigate through the search bar above, the archives tab at the top, or by browsing at your leisure. If you would like to check out tags in order to find something in particular that you may like, there is a tag cloud at the bottom of the page containing genres, decades, and artists.

Please do not steal the Happy Harmonies logo and use it elsewhere. I know they’re not that much (I’m not too fantastic at graphic design, really) but they are my creation and I’d like to keep them related just to this site.

That’s all! Enjoy!

Happy Harmonies

Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen) - Baz Luhrmann

I adore Buddy Holly beyond belief and this song is so cute and delightfully upbeat. This is the first song I taught myself on guitar (not really that crazy of a feat… it’s extremely easy!) because it is an instant mood-lifter. Since I learned it, I have plated it many times to boost moods and it works really well. I love the Rolling Stones version as well, sure, but there’s just some magical flair about Buddy Holly and his Crickets singing it. It’s playful, simple, and light. If the Holly hiccup doesn’t bring you joy, surely the bouncy background ‘crickets’ will make you smile.

This simple, optimistic song reminds us that, no matter how hard things get, the potential for happiness is always there if you take the chance and start anew. We can’t dwell on mistakes and regrets are a waste of time. Things will get better. Always.

This is one of the songs I immediately thought of upon creating this Tumblr. It’s a must on everyone’s “Get Happy” playlists, as far as I am concerned. It encompasses the passion I and so many others in the world hold for music, describing music as an experience, a “supernatural delight.” That’s truly what it is to listen to, sing along to, and dance to great music. There is an element of magic to this song’s light electric piano runs that ease your pain instantly. It’s soothing yet exhilarating. Enjoy—and smile!

Okay okay, I know that isn’t the original recording, but it’s my absolute favorite recording of this song. (Sorry, Bing, baby.) The meaning is self-evident and the happy feeling that listening to Frank’s smooth vocals brings on is undeniable.

Bad news regarding my hard drive: nothing can be retrieved. It’s fried too badly. Unfortunately, that means it’s got to be YouTube videos for a while until I am able to get my music onto this computer somehow. What an absolute pain.

Okay. I adore this song. I sneak it onto every playlist I make “for my mother.” Those are what we listen to during road trips we take together. I do make them for her, but it is nice that I like 99% of the music that is on them anyway. They’re always filled with such amazing motown and R&B and soul. In fact, I’ll have to review the track listings of some of those CDs so I can be sure to get all the songs on this website!

Sorry. I digress. I just really do adore this song. Anyway! I think this is one of the happiest songs you’ll be able to dig up from just about anywhere. The melody is fun, quick, and cheery and the upbeat lyrics perfectly match the tone set by explosive drum beat, driving bass line, and enthusiastic trumpet playing. Some songs are timeless and I think, even more than forty years later, this is one of them. It is always a joy to hear this song. Good luck not moving around in your seat when this is playing—the song essentially has arms that force your feet to move around.

As soon as I hear the peppy, staccato whistles that precede the entrance of Perry Como’s smooth-as-silk voice, a smile spreads across my face. The playful beat and endearing, reflective lyrics create a perfectly happy picture. I love the robust swell of Perry Como’s voice and the effortless transition to a beautiful, legato chorus as he and his backup singers croon that these happy memories will last forever. Hopefully, when you listen to this song, your best memories will come flooding into your mind and you, too, can be thankful and glad that, no matter what hardships you face, you will always remember these magic moments.

I dare you to try and be unhappy while listening to this song. You can’t. I don’t care who you are or what type of music you generally listen to, it’s a classic “get happy” song. If you are in a public place, I guarantee that you could sit there blasting this and no one would get mad at you. In fact, I’d wager that everyone would take it one step further than smiling to themselves and would spontaneously start singing along. The lyrics are so cute without being quite as cloying as the title may suggest and, when paired with the fun and oh-so-recognizable tune, you can’t help yourself (Get it? It’s a HILARIOUS and creative pun.) but smile.

I hate the look of these video boxes and, now that I have the majority of my music back, I am going to go back in time and re-upload the past entries as new ones. I will just be too irritated otherwise! Unfortunately, you can only upload one streaming audio file per day, so this will be a long and arduous process. It will look so much better, though, so bear with me!

Anyway, the song today, as mentioned above, is “Friends” by the great Led Zeppelin. I chose this song specifically because I feel that it embodies the exact reason why I created this Tumblr in the first place. I have heard a lot of silly people complain about the fact that Led Zeppelin songs were all either inappropriate, meaningless, or evil. This song should be used as one to prove these people wrong with. The message is evident: be there for other people. You know what it’s like to be in a slump, so help someone out of one every chance you get. I am a firm believer that there is very little in the world that has as much value as a true friend. Beyond that, spreading joy even a little self-serving. After all, when you know that you have been there for someone, you feel pretty great about yourself. It’s a win-win situation. Try to smile at each and every person you walk by today.

This is the song that originally gave me the idea to create this blog. I was driving down the thruway in a somewhat downtrodden, homesick mood. I had my iPod on shuffle and Little Willow came on. Instantly, I felt better. I hope you feel the same peace I felt as you listen to Paul McCartney’s voice melt over a simple, gentle strum of the guitar that is soon answered with a soothing twinkle from the keyboard. When Paul tells you that everything will be okay, you believe it.

This simple yet meaningful jazz song is a classic. It was written so long ago, but its words still have so much meaning in today’s world. If you don’t agree, take a step back and try to create meaning for them. After a bad day, sitting and reflecting while listening to this song will make you appreciate all the good things in your life. We sometimes get caught up in negativity and cynicism and forget about how wonderful the world can be. You don’t need to deny the bad things in the world to appreciate the great things that are there. The love and hope is there if you look.

(This is not my favorite Louis Armstrong song, but it always makes for a perfect pick-me-up. I am sure the gorgeous, ever tear-jerking “Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World” medley will make its way into this blog at some point in the future, but for today, this is enough happy! Don’t be greedy!)

This song is a feel-good hit that we all recognize. We should definitely take advice from lines like, “take your passion, make it happen.” I am a huge proponent of living by what you love. Even when it seems impossible, believing in yourself and doing what you believe in will get you far.

This song encompasses the entire purpose of this Tumblr pretty thoroughly. I hope you get the satisfaction that this song talks about when you listen to the songs I post on here.

I have loved this song for a long time, but I think the pleasure of listening to it got lost in the back of my head. Then, pretty recently, I heard it in a commercial and remembered how good it makes me feel! It is so peppy and doesn’t really have much depth to it in terms of its meaning. Still, there is a reason my dog’s name is “Sunshine.” I associate sunshine and blue skies with joy and comfort, and this song works to emu that very image.

I can’t say much about this one to enhance it other than stating the obvious fact that listening to it makes you feel upbeat. I don’t even really like Madonna on the whole, but this is a fun song that should be included in this blog. After all, I should try to appeal to a wide audience rather than just me! The lyrics are pretty straightforward. We all find ourselves wanting a little holiday from harsh reality wherein we can celebrate the positive things that surround the bad parts. I want to dance around the room just with it playing in the other tab! I am sure viewing the delightful 80s garb as that “so eighties” synthesizer beat plays enhances the experience for the better.

A fun party and dance song to lift your spirits on a Sunday evening. Hopefully, it’ll help delay a case of the Mondays or two.
